CJ Perry opens up on how her lesbian storyline with Liv Morgan materialized in WWE.
Speaking on Ring the Belle, former WWE star CJ Perry/Lana shared her thoughts on the fan-voted top five moments of her career. During the conversation, she also reflected on her lesbian storyline with Liv Morgan, which began in December 2019.
CJ Perry revealed that Paul Heyman came up with the angle while he was the Executive Director of WWE RAW. Perry also explained that she was able to identify with the storyline because she explored her sexuality during her college years.
“There was a lot going on in this love storyline,” CJ Perry began. “I was really excited about this. This is a Paul Heyman storyline. Yes, he was the showrunner. You know, it was a really great time when Paul Heyman was a showrunner. He gave so many women big stories.
“I remember Becky was going through her big story at the time. Asuka and Kairi were doing their thing. Then Zelina was doing her thing, and then I was doing my thing, and that was all on one three-hour Monday Night RAW, which is so sick. So thankful. Thank you, Paul!
“So, it was his idea that he wanted the last introjection to be you think the person was in love with Bobby, but then they do a swerve, and it’s Lana. I had throughout my 20s, and in college, I really explored my own sexuality. So, I really identified with that,” CJ Perry said.
CJ Perry explains how WWE chose Liv Morgan for the storyline
Speaking further, CJ Perry revealed that, apart from Liv Morgan, WWE also considered Sonya Deville, who recently debuted in TNA as Daria Rae, and Ruby Riott for the angle. However, since Deville was involved in Mandy Rose’s storyline with Otis on SmackDown, Vince McMahon eventually chose Morgan.
“I immediately was like, ‘Yes, I love this.’ And I didn’t know who it was going to be. They said it could be Daria, it could be Ruby, or it could be Liv. I was like, ‘All of that’s awesome.’ I, of course, thought Daria would be amazing to be with.
“Then I think they chose not to go with Daria because Daria was on SmackDown in the Mandy Rose story that they were starting with Otis. So, that was really the reason why they ended up not using Daria. They originally were thinking to use Daria first, but then Vince started really like the idea of this whole storyline with Otis. So, that’s why it then came down to Liv and Ruby, and they selected Liv, CJ Perry said.
