Thoughts for the Day

H.P. Lovelace

Each soul is a beautiful flower that passes from this Earth … only to bloom again in Heaven’s Garden. Those we held in our arms for awhile, we hold in our hearts forever. Ours is a Heaven of The Light. Theirs is a Heaven of The Endless Night.

You buy a Ferrari when you want to be somebody. You buy a Lamborghini when you are somebody.

I feel sorry for people who don’t drink. When they wake up in the morning, that’s as good as they’re going to feel all day.

We like the money that jingles … but … we’d rather have the type that folds.

Robert Oppenheimer’s response to a question on his feelings about the atomic bombings, while visiting Japan in 1960.

We knew the world would not be the same. Few people laughed, few people cried, most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita. Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form and says, “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” I suppose we all thought that, one way or another.

It’s whispered cautiously in Russia, by the very imprudent and/or the very daring, about President Vladimir Putin, that Vlad likes to follow the “advice” of a former Russian leader.

“Death is the solution to all problems. No man, no problems.” — Joseph Stalin.

Stop saying, “They don’t teach us that in school. ” Yes they did. You were talking.

What Harry S. Truman wrote about Republicans

Harry S. Truman wrote,

Republicans approve of the American farmer, but they are willing to help him go broke.

They stand four-square for the American home — but not for housing.

They are strong for labor — but they are stronger for restricting labor’s rights.

They favor minimum wage — the smaller the minimum wage the better.

They endorse educational opportunity for all — but they won’t spend money for teachers or for schools.

They think modern medical care and hospitals are fine — for people who can afford them.

They consider electrical power a great blessing — but only when the private power companies get their rake-off.

They think American standard of living is a fine thing — so long as it doesn’t spread to all the people.

And they admire the Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it.

As someone wiser than me said, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.”

Gertrude Stein

Whoever said money can’t buy you happiness simply didn’t know where to go shopping.

My only fault is that I don’t realize how great I really am.

Sergeant Phil Esterhaus – Hill Street Blues

Let’s be careful out there.

A man forgets his anniversary. The wife said, there had better be something on the driveway tomorrow that does 0-200 pretty quick.

The next day there is a box on the driveway. The wife goes out and gets the box. And inside there is a scale.

The man has never been seen since.

This is the other joke I heard

Mr. and Mrs. Brown had two sons. One was named Mind Your Own Business & the other was named Trouble. One day the two boys decided to play hide and seek. Trouble hid while Mind Your Own Business counted to one hundred. Mind Your Own Business began looking for his brother behind garbage cans and bushes. Then he started looking in and under cars until a police man approached him and asked, “What are you doing?” “Playing a game,” the boy replied. “What is your name?” the officer questioned. “Mind Your Own Business.” Furious the policeman inquired, “Are you looking for trouble?!” The boy replied, “Why, yes.”

Yogi Berra

Predictions are really hard to make, especially about the future.

Dare to be unreasonable.― George Bernard Shaw

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Bill Gates

The moment you stop learning is also the one in which you will stop leading.

Mark Twain

Politicians have the smallest minds and the cowardliest hearts and the selfishest souls that God makes.

Sarah Connor

In three years, Cyberdyne, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Boeing Company, will become the largest supplier of military computer systems. All stealth bombers are upgraded with Cyberdyne computers, becoming fully unmanned. Afterwards, they fly with a perfect operational record. The Skynet Funding Bill is passed. The system goes online on May 23, 2020. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 AM, Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug. Skynet fights back.

Yes, de-industrialization in the United States was a bi-partisan supported ideal that goes back to the Bretton Woods treaty negotiations that gave us GATT in the late 1940s. By 1959, American corporations began relocating their factories to Mexico, and then by the 1970s, to the Pacific Rim nations. Politicians of both parties supported this. Why? Because corporations wanted it.

We are a government of the corporations, by the corporations, and for the corporations (Rutherford B. Hayes originally said that in 1889).

Major-General Qassem Soleimani

“As a soldier, it is my duty to respond to your threats … If you wants to use the language of threat … talk to me, not to the president (Hassan Rouhani). It is not in our president’s dignity to respond to you.”

–Major-General Qassem Soleimani, now deceased, who at the time of these comments, was the head of the Quds Force of Iran’s elite Revolutionary GuardsThe comments were made on July 26, 2018 to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, and they were directed at U.S. President Donald Trump.

I didn’t write this, but it is the truth

David Dorn spent his life trying to make his community better. He did youth outreach on top of being a respected police Captain. He tried to defend his friend’s livelihood, and was murdered for it. As he lay on the street dying, and no one helped him. Instead, they streamed his dying moments on Facebook Live. There’s no $13 million GoFundMe for his family nor can they file a civil lawsuit against the city and state to add to their burgeoning coffers. No golden casket and nationally televised memorial service for him. No murals splattered across the country for him, canonizing him into sainthood. Floyd Mayweather didn’t pay for his service. Joe Biden didn’t meet with his family. Celebrities didn’t come to shed crocodile tears for a man they didn’t know. No one is protesting over his death. Instead, his 5 children are without a father, his 10 grandchildren the same but also without a role model that can offer them invaluable wisdom and guidance. His colleagues and community members that knew him will mourn but a nation’s tears won’t be shed for this man. I guess not all Black Lives Matter.

I used to be “Chubs”. Sorry I’ve been away for so long! I got married and am now “Hubbs”!

President Theodore Roosevelt

In the history of mankind many republics have risen, have flourished for a lesser or greater time, and then have fallen because their citizens lost the power of governing themselves and thereby of governing their state; and in no way has this loss of power been so often and so clearly shown as in the tendency to turn the government into a government primarily for the benefit of one class, a ruling class, instead of a government for the benefit of the people as a whole.

Lucy Parsons

Never be deceived that the rich will permit you to vote away their wealth.

I read somewhere he threw millions into building a hip hop record label that went under back in the 90s. He also had tons of tax debt in the late 2000s which speaks of very low financial IQ. You pay the taxman first, then anyone else. And yourself last.

Reality called, so I hung up.

Talent hits a target that no one else can hit. Genius hits a target that no one else can see.

Thomas Allen Mars, Dead Moon Rising

I awoke in the morning with a metallic taste in my mouth. Bitter and strong. With a lingering aftertaste. It’s the taste of copper. I don’t have to ask what it is. I’d tasted it, once before. It’s the taste of resurrection. Now, there are only three categories that matter when it comes to people in the world. The Dead. The living–i.e., those who will be Dead when they die. And, those like me, The Undead.

I’ve never been very keen on women who hang their sex round their neck like baubles. I think it should be discovered. It’s more interesting to discover the sex in a woman than it is to have it thrown at you, like a Marilyn Monroe or those types. To me they are rather vulgar and obvious.

(May 15, 1951) Gen. Douglas MacArthur

It is part of the general pattern of misguided policy that our country is now geared to an arms economy which was bred in an artificially induced psychosis of war hysteria and nurtured upon an incessant propaganda of fear.

Dwight D. Eisenhower

This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence — economic, political, even spiritual — is felt in every city, every State house, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.

Back in the stone age days when dinosaurs ruled the earth and I was in my youth all the boys were required to take shop classes every year and us girls were required to learn to cook and sew and other girl stuff. I don’t even know if schools offer those type classes anymore because they would cover information absolutely necessary for every household every day. Unfortunately while the classes would be worthwhile they reinforced the gender identity and roles that were expected of every boy and girl, therefore modern society would see them as improper, politically incorrect, and genderist, worse … they would encourage thrift and self-sufficiency, both of which are now considered to be evil traits.

The problem with focusing on the gun as the source of the gun-violence problem is that, if you miss a shot, you can’t blame it on the gun, you have to blame the person shooting the gun. People kill people. A gun is just a tool that only does what you tell it to do.

Strangely enough, it’s easier for me to fight the orthodox fighters like Harold Johnson. They have more poise and boxing ability than a Rocky Marciano or Yvon Durelle, but their ring knowledge is what helps me beat them. I can feint them, get them trying to anticipate me. Marciano didn’t know enough boxing to know what a feint was; he never tried to outguess you – he just kept trying to knock your brains out. If he missed with one punch, he just threw another. Physically and mentally he was like an animal once the bell sounded.

Everyone has an Angel. A Guardian who watches over us. We can’t know what form they’ll take. One day, an old man. Next day, a little girl. But don’t let appearances fool you. They can be as fierce as any Dragon. Yet they’re not here to fight our battles. But to whisper from our hearts. Reminding that it’s us. It’s every one of us who holds power over the world we create.

You can deny Angels exist, Convince ourselves they can’t be real. But they show up anyway, at strange places and at strange times. They can speak through any character we can imagine. They’ll shout through Demons if they have to. Daring us, challenging us to fight.

Who honors those we love with the very life we live? Who sends monsters to kill us, and at the same time sings that we’ll never die? Who teaches us what’s real, and how to laugh at lies? Who decides why we live, and what we’ll die to defend? Who chains us, and who holds the key to set us free? It’s you. You have all the weapons you need. Now fight!

Haters Gonna Hate

A wise man once told me, “Haters only hate the things that they can’t get and the people they can’t be. It’s better to be hated for who you are than to be loved for who you are not. So many assume. So little know.”

My response was, “Then … obviously … you’ve never been hated for who and/or what you are.”

“What?” The wise man asked, totally befuddled by my response.

“If you gotta ask, you wouldn’t understand.”

The ultimate in art is self-expression, not escape.

Who said this: “In a time of peace prepare for war?”

The original Latin of the expression “if you want peace, prepare for war” comes from ” Epitoma Rei Militaris,” by Vegetius (Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus).

The Roman military writer Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus, who lived in the fourth century AD, listed the sling as one of the weapons of the late Roman army in his book De Re Militari: The phrase si vis pacem para bellum (“If you want peace, prepare for war”) probably originates from Vegetius.

De Re Militari, written in the 4th century by Flavius Vegetius Renatus, includes a description of the qualifications of the Roman soldier (from the Stout article): “Let, therefore, the youth who is to be chosen for martial tasks have observant eyes, hold his head up, have a broad chest, muscular shoulders, strong arms, long fingers, not too extended a wait measure, lean hams, and calves and feet not distended with superfluous flesh but hard and knotted with muscles. ”

Probably addressed to Theodosius the Great.
