This article, Nicolas Cage’s Superman Test Footage Is the Most ’90s Thing Ever, originally appeared on TVGuide.com.
There have been a lot of different takes on Superman over the years, but this might be the most ridiculous one yet.
In the late ’90s, Tim Burton was working on a Superman movie that was going to star Nicolas Cage, aka the man who named his son Kal-El. Sadly, Superman Lives never came to fruition, but we have clearly racked up a good deal of karma points because The Los Angeles Times has shared some test footage of Cage — doing stretches, no less — in the impossibly tight, blindingly shiny Superman suit for the film, complete with sculpted-on abs and pecs.
Once you see this video, you will never look at Superman the same. So prepare yourselves.
The footage is part of the upcoming documentary The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?, which will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and VOD on July 9.
Check out the insane test footage here and watch a trailer for the documentary below.

and what did Warner Brothers go on to do? make two Superman films that the public didn’t really like.
Superman Lives starring Nicolas Cage and directed by Tim Burton would have been weird- rainbow hologram suits, a depressed alien-like Kal-el, and other departures from Superman as we know it. Jon Schnepp (Metalocalypse) created a documentary– “The Death of ‘Superman Lives’; What Happened?” talking to Burton, Cage, and the creative team about the story they wanted to tell, what went wrong, and how Superman Lives would have affected the DC cinematic universe as a whole. Could the film have been good despite its strangeness? Kim Horcher, Tim Frisch, and Jenna Busch (Legion of Leia) discuss!
Produced and edited by Tim Frisch

Love Superman? Tim Burton wanted to make a Superman movie starring Nicolas Cage wearing a robot suit in the 90s. Kevin Smith wrote a script, wardrobe tests were done… and yet it never happened. Jon Schnepp is making a doc called “The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?” about the weirdest Superman movie never made, and we talk about his plans for it. Donate to Jon’s Kickstarter by March 10! And if he secures more than his budget he’ll shoot scenes from the script!!
