Duke Ellington’s early-1950’s pre-Sam Woodyard drummers

George Edward “Butch” Ballard legendary Philly jazz drummer, celebrating his 89th birthday & performing @ Mozaic in the Frankford section of Philadelphia. Butch performed & recorded with the Duke Ellington, Count Basie & Cootie Williams big bands to name a few. My only regret is the ‘noise’ from the crowd during his intimate ‘finger’ drum solo.

A George Manney film.

Dave Black long Jazz drum solo

Another pioneer of the double bass concept. I simply love this man’s licks. Another vid from drummerworld.com. (even though I’ve been playing guitar for a little over two and a half years, I have the deepest respect and admiration for drummers.)
